26 Lessons

I totally got this idea from Amber - her 21st birthday was recently so she did a post on 21 lessons she's learned in her 21 years.

Well today friends, I'm one year older and thought this would be a fun tradition to do. But before I get to that I have to brag about myself just a little bit. Late last fall I joined Weight Watchers - and while I haven't hit my goal weight, I've made a lot of progress. I don't have a "before" and "after" picture (again, I'm still a work in progress), but I thought it would be fun to show "before" and "during" pictures, because you can really see a difference.

The first picture is me last year on my birthday, and the bottom one is me this year on my birthday.

Wahoo! Can't wait until I get to the "after!"

And here...a few fun lessons I've either learned (or watched other people learn).
  1. Buy clothes for the body you have now, not the body you want later.
  2. Along with that, dress for the job you want, not just the job you have.
  3. Surround yourself with friends who love you, will support you, but who will call you out on your crap.
  4. Target = bliss
  5. Life is too short to be worried about drama - don't let those people weigh you down.
  6. When you are tired and PMSing, and someone cuts you off in traffic, it is perfectly acceptable to honk and yell at them in your car.
  7. When your sister says "It's good you two found each other," in reference to something only you and your spouse found funny, take that as a compliment.
  8. When you're sick, watching marathons of Friends, Gilmore Girls, and 24, is essential to feeling better.
  9. Never take people for granted - by the time you realize what you've done you may have already lost them.
  10. Splurge on your honeymoon. Whether it's when you go, where you stay, or the places you eat, you will never have another trip like this again. If it comes down to paying more to get the honeymoon suite or using that money for the wedding, get the suite and choose something less expensive for the wedding. (Trust me, you won't regret it).
  11. A lot of health problems can be prevented by staying hydrated. (Thanks Mom).
  12. Enjoy the everyday. Sometimes bad days (or bad dates!) make for great stories later.
  13. Laugh. A LOT.
  14. Learn to pick your battles.
  15. Kill 'em with kindness. It's really hard to be mean to someone when they're being nice to you.
  16. There is no better feeling than finishing a good book. (Need some suggestions of what to read? Click here).
  17. Two times when you should buy something, regardless of the price: if a dress has pockets, and if the heels are comfy.
  18. A smile can go a long way. Maybe the reason that barista made your drink incorrectly is because he was taking care of a sick grandmother or child. While it's within reason for you to ask them to re-make your Venti-no foam-double pump-caramel macchiato-with soy (seriously?), smiling and thanking them when they hand it back to you could make their day.
  19. Passive aggressiveness is crap. If you have a problem, talk it out. Otherwise, get over it.
  20. Things don't always go according to plan. That is not always a bad thing.
  21. Chick-fil-A = glory. Tasty chicken advertised by cows? How could you not love that?
  22. Stand up for what you believe in. Whether that means attending a protest rally, supporting the arts, or volunteering in your community - if it's important to you that's all that matters.
  23. Get to know your co-workers. They can become your "work family." And when you're having a rough day - it makes all the difference.
  24. It's okay to talk smack about where you live ("ugh there's nothing to do, oh it's so lame,") but to defend it until you're blue in the face when someone else criticizes it.
  25. No matter how brief of a moment, when you accidentally poke yourself in the eye it will sting like a chunk of lava exploded in your cornea.
  26. Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right.

Any lessons you've learned you'd like to share? Happy Thursday!

Ahh, fun post. Happy Birthday! You look fab! I also joined WW about a year ago & it has been such a great experience.

Totally agree with all of these. Especially dresses w/ pockets. So glad that is a trend these days! :)

Have a fantastic bday!

Happy Birthday! Lesson #1 is a really good one and is one that I have also learned this year. You should always love who you are while you aspire to improve yourself!

Just stumbled upon your blog. Happy birthday! I agree-- Target and Chick-Fil-A are amazing. They should start putting Chick-Fil-A's IN Target! Brilliant!

YAY! Glad to hear my post inspired you.

First, you look GREAT! I LOVE the dress you're wearing in the second photo.

Second, I couldn't agree more with the first one "buy clothes for the body you have now, not the body you want later" - SO true! Anybody can look GREAT if they dress for their size!

And smiling and kindness really DOES go a long way. It would do a lot of people a lot of good to learn that!

I hope you had a wonderful birthday. You look amazing!

#2... so true! I almost always dress nicer than I need to at work because I plan on moving on to bigger and better things some day.

And I like the honeymoon advise... I'll have to keep that in mind!

Hey, just going through your blog cuz I have the day off and feel craptastic.. I completely agree about dressing for the job you want. That's how I go to work everyday (I am temporary so on dress down Friday, I slightly dress down but I don't go all the way dressed down..) And the honeymoon advice is sooo true.. We still talk about how amazing Jamaica was and all-inclusive and pretty much it has ruined us forever and we haven't gone on a major vacation since because we are saving to afford THAT good of a trip again!
