Random Friday

Happy Friday! Prepare yourself, because this post is a huge hodge-podge of randomness.

One of my fabulous friends read this post about nail polish and was kind of enough to loan me the OPI color, "I'm Not Really A Waitress." Final verdict: Love. It's not as dark of a red as I typically wear but I think that's why I like it so much! (I would recommend two coats though). Sorry for the somewhat creepy picture - I was trying to show the color of the polish by putting it against something dark, and I had to tilt the camera in a weird way to get this to really come out.

Next up: want some free UGGS? Hmm, now you're paying attention, aren't you? Unfortunately I think this really only applies to bloggers, but I didn't read all the fine print. Go here to read how to enter the drawing and be sure to put the UGG button on your blog. (I have no idea what the chances are of winning but I'm already thinking about prancing around in my free UGGS. That's right. Prancing).

Okay readers, if you have not checked out Overheard in the Office, go do it now. (I'll wait). What? You still didn't want to extend your finger and click that link? Then I'll give you an example of how incredibly hilarious it is. People submit conversations they hear in their office and the blog updates almost hourly. A recent favorite of mine:

Man to friend: If I knew it was that easy to lose weight from getting sick I'd have licked my dog's butt a long time ago.

Hold on. I've read that five times and I still have to catch my breath from laughing so hard.

Moving right along - I have three dilemnas/questions for all my tech-savvy readers and I'm hoping you can help me out.
  1. I have all the comments requirements enabled in my blog settings, yet I still cannot get the phrase "0 Comments" (or however many comments are on a specific post), to appear below a post. Any suggestions? I Googled it but didn't really come up with anything. Right now in order to comment you have to click on the post title and then you can enter it below. I'd like readers to be able to see if there are comments without having to click on one post - they can just click on the "15 Comments" line and it will take them to that specific post. Any advice?
  2. Have any of you bloggers had success with timed posts? I've been trying to figure out how to do one, but so far: epic fail. I'll be traveling for work in November and I'm in the process of lining up some guest bloggers (wahoo!) but I'd like to try out a timed post before then to make sure it works. I think you just select the post in your draft folder and click "timed" but apparantly it's more complicated than that. Suggestions?
  3. Is there a setting so the links I provide in a post automatically open into a new tab or window? Right now when I look at a post and click a link it goes away from the blog and into whatever the website is. No problem, except nine times out of ten when I'm finished reading that site I click out of it and then can't go back to the blog. Is this just an editor problem I'm having or do you all see this too?
If someone would please please take pity on this somewhat technically-challenged blogger and help me out I would be eternally grateful! Thank you thank you!

I am moving right along with my 2009 Busy Bookworm Challenge - last night I finished The Girls From Ames which was on my to-read list. I have to admit my real motivation is that we're reading it for my book club and we meet in less than two weeks, but I finished it and a review will be coming soon!

Speaking of the Busy Bookworm Challenge, I was talking to one of my co-workers yesterday and he told me a great quote that I want to share with you.

You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.
(Attributed to Charles Jones)

What do you think readers? I absolutely love this quote, but do you think experiences play a role in who you are? Are experiences created by the people you meet or by something you do? I'm interested to hear your thoughts about this!

I hope all of you have a fabulous weekend, and thanks for reading this crazy all over the place post! Just in case you still aren't smiling (how could you not be after Overheard in the Office?), here is a picture of an awesome puppy.

Her name is Bella. (NO, not like Twilight, she's way cooler than that). She belongs to a good friend of mine and I absolutely adore her! Happy weekend!

That is a beautiful shade of red nailpolish. I might actually have to start painting my nails.

Some possible fixes for your blogger dilemas:
1. Settings > Comments > Comments Default for Posts = New Posts Have Comments.
2. When you're editing a post, go to post options at the bottom just above the publish post button. There is an option to change the post date and time.
3. No clue.
I don't know if those will help or not, but hopefully that gives you somewhere to go. I'm not an expert, but those are some of the things I do.

Yes, Nicole is right about number 2! I schedule ALL my posts in advance!! The post that I did today on Living Alone, I wrote it and scheduled it LAST WEEK. It's the easiest way for me to do things since I'm so busy!

3. I know how to do this in wordpress but can't remember how to do it in blogger. Did you try googling that?? Google can be pretty helpful. In wordpress when you go to add the link there is an option for the "target window" and I always set mine to "open in a NEW window".

LOVE that nail polish colour! So pretty!

I, too, could help you in Wordpress, but not this.
