Are blogs the new letters?

Hi readers! I'm traveling for work this week so please welcome Nicole from My Life with a Crazy Puppy!

When Becky asked me to do a guest post on her blog, I was really excited. Then I was worried because I had no clue what to write about. But then I got to thinking... how do I even know Becky? We don't know each other in "real life," but just through online communication. And that reminded me of writing to pen pals in elementary school.

Did you ever have a pen pal? I just remember the awful boring questions we used to write each other. What's your favorite color? What's your favorite animal? What's your family like? But if you think about it, it was nice to know a little bit about someone else that you've never met before. And everyone always got excited when it was the day for letters to arrive to see how your pen pal responded.

I also remember when AOL was still the online service provider to have. There were tons of online games with chat rooms in them. There was this one girl that I played with a lot who was around my age. We even became "snail mail" pen pals for a while because it was always nice to receive something in the mail. (Don't worry, I asked my parents first... haha!) Oh to go back to the days when mail didn't primarily consist of bills.

So I guess what I'm getting at is that blogging is kind of like having pen pals, only you have more all at the same time. You're getting to know someone (sometimes complete strangers) in a way that you never would without the writing. There is communication back and forth between the posts and the comments. It's just inspiring to know that in the age of hyper-connectivity people can still find a way to reach out and actually communicate with each other.

Thanks, Becky, for being my online pen pal. : )

Thanks to you too Nicole! What about you dear readers? Do you feel like you have a community of online pen pals? Be sure to visit Nicole over at

Good analogy, Nicole! I loved having pen pals when I was young. I never thought of blogging in that context but it is so true! I love how blogging allows us to connect with people, regardless of their geographical location!

I DID have pen pals when I was younger. Random ones from all over North America and even one in Malaysia for a long time. I think this is such a cool analogy because blogging IS like having a whole bunch of pen pals :) I love it!

I did...and I had friends who became penpals when we moved away. I still write to one of them and it has been 20 years!
