A little thistle

My dear friend (and now real life friend even though we've only g-chatted and emailed and have yet to meet in real life) Kyla has opened up her Etsy shop, A little thistle.

I've been anticipating the opening of her shop for awhile and I was so beyond delighted I couldn't stand it! Kyla opened her (virtual) doors first thing Monday morning and before I checked email, blogs, facebook, twitter, or even had breakfast, I was scrolling through the beauty of her handmade items. She was gracious enough to answer a few questions about her shop - read on to see her beautiful work and maybe even win a giveaway!

How did you get started with your Etsy shop?
The idea started for me last spring as a way to have a bigger creative outlet than my blog. I came up with a name and registered it as a business, did a lot of research and took an amazing online class called Indie Business that was full of incredible advice. Since then I've been dreaming up items, making friends with local small business owners and branding my little shop!

You have five separate lines in your shop – necklaces, notebooks, pins, headbands, and scarves – how are you inspired to create all these different items?
I'm inspired by the things I love in my life - giant warm knits in cold weather, the notebooks I keep my blog ideas in, old fashioned jewelery, cute headbands and fun, feminine brooches. I love having a wide range of projects, and making a few different things makes the construction process a lot more interesting for me.
Can you explain your process of making pieces?
When I start making something there's a lot of dreaming and testing involved first, I tend to go through two or three versions of a piece before I'm satisfied with its design. A big part of that is working on how I can make it last - is there a way to make it stronger or more secure? What can I change to make it stand up to lots of spot cleaning or dry cleaning? And then lastly, I'll look for chances to add another level of detail - maybe with embroidery or finishing the item in a unique way. I love paying an unexpected level of attention to detail.
Your floweret pins say they’re made from upcycled-felted wool – do you use recycled or upcycled material for anything else in your shop?
Right now the flowerets are the only 100% upcycled items I have, but I'm going to be making upcycled zipper headbands soon too. For the launch I wanted to make sure I had items that I could restock quickly, and part of that is having enough materials to recreate a piece, upcycling makes that a little more tricky but I definitely want to explore it.

What's your favorite piece right now - does that ever change?
I think that whatever I'm working on tends to be my favourite- but I love the notebooks. They're thick and have really high quality paper, and the elastic closure is a beautiful detail. They were one something that occurred to me in passing, but that I really worked hard on to make a reality, so I think that makes me love them more.
And just for fun, if you could only eat one food for rest of your life what would it be?
Fancy vegetarian sushi! I would be the happiest girl alive.

What do you think readers? Are you as enamored with her shop as I am? If so, hop on over to Kyla's blog to see how you can win the sewing shears necklace!

Happy hump day readers!

Yes, I am definitely enamored by Kyla AND her blog. :) And she is even MORE awesome in person.

I love her items. I need to sit down with a cup of coffee this weekend, pour over her options, and buy something for myself... and probably for a friend.

I hope her shop is a smashing success!!

Her shop is amazing! I couldn't get it to load for me on Monday (probably too much traffic!) so I am looking through it now. I adore scarves and the notebooks. I think I may be ordering a few things for myself and friends!
