The love of an aunt

Hi readers! I'm traveling for work this week so I'm leaving you in the hands of some fabulous guest bloggers to talk about love - people they love, things they love, or just love in general. (This just might have something to do with a lovely giveaway coming soon!)

Today Stephany from Stephany Writes (no stranger to guest blogging for me!) is here talking about something near and dear to my heart!

On September 25, 2008, I became an aunt. The experience itself was thrilling. Seeing my brother as a father, my sister-in-law as a mother and how much intense love they had for their baby inspired me. The moment I saw his pudgy, newborn face, I was in love. He was fat and gorgeous and absolutely perfect.
Over the next two years, I've had the privilege of watching him grow up. Learning to sit up. Learning to crawl. Learning to walk. Learning to talk (in English and Spanish!). Learning to laugh and make others laugh. Learning to run and have fun. Learning about football and basketball and cleaning. I've watched him grow from a baby who was just delightful to look at, to a little boy who is forever making me laugh with his antics and silly songs. Every time he sees a sports game on TV, he shouts "Go, go, go," while pumping his fist like he's seen his daddy do. One of his favorite things to do is clean, everything from sweeping the floor to washing the windows to dusting the TV.
He's amazing. And when I hear him say, "Titi," (his nickname for his aunts, from Tia), my heart melts over and over again. Maybe it's because I never had a super close relationship with any of my aunts and uncles that it's made me want to cultivate this relationship all the more. I want him to be someone he wants to visit and see, even when he's 15 years old. I want him to be able to confide in me, be comfortable around me, and never doubt my love for him.

Being an aunt is a totally different experience than any other relationship I've had. I have a duty to this boy and I take it very seriously. I am crazy in love with this kid and seeing him smile or laugh at something I say or do lights up my life. As he grows up, I want us to grow closer. I haven't had any good examples of this in my life (I'm not close to any of my nine uncles), but I don't want to repeat the cycle.
I keep waiting for the announcement that my brother and sister-in-law are going to have another baby because I can't wait to shower another one (or two!) with more loves, hugs, and kisses than ever imaginable. Until then, I'm content to grow this relationship and be the aunt I need to be towards my nephew. Because he's pretty darn amazing and I couldn't imagine a world without him in it.

Are you an aunt? What's your relationship like? If not, what do you imagine your relationship would be like to future nephews or nieces?

What do you think readers? I literally gasped after I read this - I feel the same way as an aunt! Thanks for this post Stephany! (And isn't her nephew adorable?)

I am an aunt to 4 amazing nephews and I will be an aunt again in late May/early June. I absolutely adore being an aunt. I was blessed w/ lots of awesome aunts and uncles - some of which I have grown closer to as I've become an adult, which is pretty cool. I love that i have such an active role in my nephews lives. Especially the 2 that lives in the Minneapolis area. I take the older one out for 'dates' a couple of times a years which is so fun! They totally know me as the book-obsessed auntie.

I sometime worry that I will never have children of my own, but I comforted by the fact that I have my nephews to dote upon in the event that I don't have children of my own!

My brother is only 18 so no kids from him (thank goodness ;) ) but my cousin who grew up with me like a brother just had a baby (who I'm yet to meet) and between Eric's brother and sister he has 3 nieces and 1 nephew who I ADORE!! I think my favourite thing is seeing Eric with them, though :)

I am an aunt to a 3 year-old boy and a baby girl on the way. Next to being a wife and mommy it is my FAVORITE JOB EVER!!! My nephew's birthday was one of the best days of my life - he makes my heart happy and is TRULY one of my very dearest friends! We go on special dates and I always keep his favorite snacks in the fridge :)
