Ah, Wednesday

Today is the beginning of Lent. While some people observe it differently, I always try to give up something that's a sacrifice - I want to be aware of the sacrifice of Lent so I want to do something that's going to impact me daily.

One year I gave up texting, last year I gave up the snooze button, and this year I'm giving up painting my nails.
It might sound silly, but if you've read this blog for awhile, you know how much I love nail polish. I paint my nails (we're talking base coat, two coats of color, and a top coat), at least twice a week. I paint my nails to boost myself out a bad mood, when I want to relax, or feel fun - so forty days without color on my fingers or toes? Killer. However, the mister is super excited about it - it drives him nuts when I paint my nails (because of the frequency), so he says he's looking forward to not smelling acetone for awhile.

On another note, a big shout out to my little (and by little I mean younger, because she's much taller than me) sister - it's her birthday today! She texted me last night saying, "can you believe I'm going to be 20 tomorrow?" My response was "No, I can not. I used to wipe your butt peepee - you're growing up too fast."

We're having dinner with her tonight and I can't wait to give her a big hug and tell her she's stinky all at the same time. (Okay seriously, you may not think this is funny but if my sister is reading this she is cracking up right now. Guaranteed).  Happy Birthday JenJen - I love you!

Do you observe Lent? Do you give anything up? Do you think you'll be able to talk me down when I'm going through nail polish withdrawal? (Especially because I just realized we have a wedding to go to during this time - ahhhh!) Leave some birthday love for my sis in the comments!

Happy hump day!

I do observe Lent. I talked about it with my mom (the ultimate Catholic) and for the first time in my life, I am not giving anything up this year... The reason for this is that I eliminated dairy from my diet on March 1st and I honestly don't know what else I can really take out of my diet, you know? So instead, I am doing something extra - I plan on praying a decade of the rosary every night before going to bed. And I will be volunteering the week of Holy Week at this local charity that packages food for children in poor nations. So I guess this year I will be focusing on almsgiving and prayer instead of fasting!

Good luck on the nail polish thing!

I also have given up on giving things up...instead, each year I try to do something that can be hard (for me!). This year I have an especially challenging class at school so I'm going to make a conscious effort each day to praise and compliment the kids instead of always nagging and correcting (which is how I feel like my year has gone so far!). My positive attitude will hopefully help them be more positive and better behaved. Who knows! We'll see. Good luck with the nails!! That's a good one.

Love this :) This is my first year ever observing lent, it wasn't something we practiced in my family. I am really enjoying hearing what people are giving up and I love the sacrificial aspect.

At our church, the suggestion was to give up something that's taking away from how much time we have, so I am not going to be using Facebook at home anymore. I sit at home all evening refreshing it, it's a real time-suck. Hello, productivity!

I give something up some years for Lent, but not every time. This year I'm not, but if I do I'm with you: it needs to be a sacrifice. I do like to change my thinking during Lent, though, and this year I'm doing a read-through of the New Testament with my church which is pretty intense.

I can't believe you paint your nails that often. I like having mine painted but the process is so annoying to me that I rarely do it!

My hubby is catholic, but I'm not - he almost always gives up TV, so that means I do, too! I'm not about to watch it with him a few rooms away suffering. Plus honestly I don't watch tv on my own; only if he is.
Happy birthday sister!!!

I don't observe lent and, honestly, had NO idea it started today! I have never given ANYTHING up for it but I think it's a good concept. I read something on Twitter yesterday that said the thing you really don't want to give up is the thing you NEED to give up. Well that would probably be all my internet/twitter/facebook time soooo, ya, DON'T want to give that up. Maybe next year! Ha!

Yup, I do observe Lent every year. I always do a takeaway and then add something. So this year I'm giving up soda (it's creeped back into my diet), fried food (um, I blame dating on this one) and ice cream. I'm hoping to jumpstart my weight loss with this... And then I'm adding exercising at least three times a week. I'll also be volunteering a few times over the next 40 days assuming it all works out at a local food bank!

I gave up drinking one Lent and facebook another and they both totally changed my perspective on both. Lent really works for me. Last time I gave up fried food for Lent I stuck with it for 18 months! Here's hoping...

I observe Lent some years and others, I completely forget about it. I would have forgotten about it this year if it wasn't for twitter! I decided to give up sleep - I'm going to get up half an hour earlier instead of lounging in bed.

I don't observe lent but yours sound like a good idea! I'm always painting my nails 1-2 times a week too.

I'm Jewish. Sometimes I consider giving something up around Lent just because... well, everyone else is, & dedication seems to be in high gear, so why not join in the perseverance & give up something just to see if I can? But... well, I haven't.

I don't observe Lent, but I did grow up Catholic and for some reason it's a pet peeve of mine when people who are not religious at all just use it as an excuse to lose weight and give up some kind of junk food. Why can't believe just do that another time than Lent haha. I like your idea that you give up something non-diet related that is going to be a real sacrifice for you. Just post here any time you are having a serious nail polish desire! PS. Can you polish other people's nails because I would LOVE you to come give me a manicure :)

You win Lent. Seriously.

What color will you paint your nails once Easter arrives?

Good luck, babe!

I have to say the year you gave up texting takes the cake. Please don't do that ever again! That was brutal. :)

Didn't you give up Starbucks one year too?
