Retro Chic

I've been thinking about retro and vintage fashion lately.  I've always been a comfort over style kind of girl, but classics are classic for a reason - the women look elegant, chic, and effortless. Some of the silhouettes created by pieces in the 50s and 60s are simply stunning.

I used to be all about the mass-produced products, but I'm starting to understand why people love vintage items. Who's to say that ring didn't once belong to a waitress in a dingy bar who wore it when she got her shot as an actress or singer? Or maybe the reason that necklace is a dull gold is because the girl who wore it rubbed it each night as she said a prayer for her fiance to come home safe and sound from the war. Even if the stories aren't true it's fun to think about them!

I can't believe it's taken me this long to realize that behind every piece of furniture or clothing there's a story. While I'm not going to drastically going to change my style (and let's face it, I still love places like Target and Ikea), I want to start incorporating a little bit of vintage and retro into my wardrobe.

Are you a fan of retro and vintage styles? Do you come up with stories for vintage items you've acquired? Anyone have any good shops to recommend?

Happy almost Friday!

I do not own any vintage items - but I love the idea of them! I have told Kyla that she needs to take me shopping for vintage items as she has such a good eye. I think I would get overwhelmed (which tends to happen in general whenever I shop!).

Hehe - a resounding YES! to this post. I could totally see you styled up like Peggy in Mad Men! So darling:

Echoing Lisa's comment... if Kyla could go with me, I'd be golden. Or Lauren from Lauren from Texas. I don't do well vintage shopping BUT I do have a fabulous scarf that my brother got me for Christmas and I think it's from the 70s? I just love it; retro colors, awesome design, super easy to wear with my outfits. And I love it. I would love, love, love to have a retro dress too!

I do have a few vintage items here and there, but not nearly enough! I definitely think there is something to finding those special, one of a kind pieces, be it clothing, jewelry, decoration, or furniture. I'm a Target nut for stuff like furniture (because hello: it's so cheap! And everything looks so cute!) but it's still fun to decorate with older pieces. And I love looking for vintage dresses on Etsy! <3

I'm going to repeat what Nora and Lisa said - ha! I do not have a good eye when it comes to vintage shopping AND I get kind of overwhelmed in thrift stores/vintage shops - how do you separate the good stuff from the junk?

That being said, I LOVE the idea of owning a few really beautiful, classic pieces that NOT everyone and their dog might also own :)

Oh, and those little stories you invented are too cute :)

I agree with Amber - I'm not good when it comes to vintage shopping. But I've always said if I could go back in time, I'd love to go to the 50's to wear poodle skirts & go make out with the boyfriend on top of his car at the lake, hahaha.

I love vintage. I used to have a lot of vintage stuff, but four pregnancies and I've grown out of it all.

And I've yet to find any good stores in our area. There were some fab ones in NC and I used to shop there. Here? Just haven't found any.
