Make new friends, but keep the old

I've always been a read-one-book-at-a-time kind of girl. I like to devote my full attention to one story so I can really be involved with it. However, I'm starting a new tradition. (It's not really a tradition, but I think that makes it sound fancier). I'm going to start pairing a classic with a newer book - this way when the classic gets a little slow or dry I can hop over to the novel or non-fiction book that's a little bit lighter. I think it'll keep me motivated to finish the classics and get more books read.

First up: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and The Violets of March by Sarah Jio.

I'm excited about reading both these books, but I'm just as excited for one of the authors, Sarah Jio. (No offense Tolstoy). Sarah is a blogger, writer, and mom-extraordinaire who I first got to know through Glamor's Vitamin G blog. I would comment on her blog, and after awhile I friend requested her on facebook, including my Glamour account handle so she didn't think I was some random creepy person. She accepted my request and told me of course she knew who I was! She's been sweet enough to comment on this little blog a few times, and once even linked back to me from Vitamin G! (Since I kind of a think of her as a celebrity I was ecstatic and definitely may have shrieked to my husband "it's like I'm famous!")

Sarah wrote The Violets of March and it comes out today! I (obviously) think Sarah's awesome, but I love that even if I didn't know her I would want to pick it up anyway - it sounds really good! (Want to see the book trailer?)

So I thought I'd give Sarah a little shout out, and let you know about a book you just might want to pick up today. Plus, now that I've told you I'm going to read these books you'll expect reviews and will hold me accountable, right?

Have you read anything good lately? Do you read more than one book at a time? Has it worked for you or was it too confusing?

I do not read more than one book at a time - or I try not to. I somemtimes have to make an exception if I need to switch over to a book club book to finish that in time for a meeting.

Upon Nora's recommendation, I am reading "Shadow of the Wind". I bought it 2 years ago and it's been sitting on my TBR shelf! Then last week she mentioned it on her blog so I was inspired to start reading it. and I love it so far!

I am almost ALWAYS reading several books at once! Partly because of the classes I teach, and partly because I have book ADD! It helps me to take a break from one style of writing for a while. Have fun with Anna!

Anna Karenina is one of my favorite books! I really love Tolstoy, hope you do too. I even visited his house (now a museum) in Russia. :)

I can sometimes do the two book at one time thing... usually what happens, though, is I get so into one book I forget about the other one for awhile. :) Right now I'm reading Lucia, Lucia by Adriana Trigiani. Afer that it's Kingdom Keepers: Power Play. And then maybe Harry Potter #5. Is it sad that I have my book readings that planned out? Probably.

Becky! I'm so incredibly flattered by this post!!! I adore you for all the kind things you said and I am going to be crossing my fingers over here that you love VIOLETS! xoxo

The last book I read was "Eat, Pray, Love" (after stubbornly refusing to succumb to the hype for like...ever). Have to say I loved it (and it really resonated with me, too). The relevant review is up on my blog.

Before that I'd picked up Jo Nesbo's The Snowman" and Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar"(reviews also available on the blog).

Right now, I'm reading Paul Auster's "The New York Trilogy" (and "The Private Papers of Eastern Jewel" and "The Hand that First Held Mine").

Ps. Guess this last bit answers your question: Yes. I read, at least, 3 books simoultaneously @ any given point in time. My "ADD" causes me to get easily bored - and having the choice of switching between different things helps me stay focused and motivated :P
