In memory

Today in the U.S. we're celebrating Memorial Day. A day to say thank you to the brave men and women who gave their lives serving this country.

Yesterday I was at Mount Vernon with my mom, and I overheard a conversation that made me excited and want to cry all at once. A dad was telling his kids (probably middle-school aged) that the man up ahead on the bench was a veteran, and they could give their letters to him. He said, "just shake his hand and thank him for his service - then you can give him your letters." The kids were really excited - and I started tearing up when I realized they had either collected or written letters to military members (veterans or active), to thank them, and were giving them out over this weekend.

A lot of people get today off as a holiday. And while barbeques and the start of summer are fabulous, I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the day.

To all military members - active, retired, or those we're remembering - thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

Aw, that is such a cool thing for that dad and his children to do. What a great way to instill a sense of both patriotism and thankful for our veterans!

I would think DC would be one of the best areas in the country to recognize the efforts of our Veterans because of all of the Landmarks and such.

Hope you had fun at Mt Vernon! Makes me think of my visit to see you!

Dear B, Kinda got teary reading what you wrote. I wonder what the veteran's reaction was to the letters - very likely he teared up as well. It's a powerful holiday.
I just went through the pictures I took last year in WDC. Wish I had taken more (I always wish that) and yet can't come up with text to go with it. Must ponder.
Big hugs to you and Ben. (geez, I hope I got his name right...!)

I think it's so easy for people to forget the REAL reason for long weekends/holidays and just look at them as a "day off". Great post lady!
