So much more than soap

Yesterday I showed you some skull soap that I want need. Today I would like to introduce you to Aubrey, the creator of that soap and so many more incredible items. She runs her Etsy shop, Aubrey Elizabeth Apothecary and was sweet enough to take a few minutes to answer some questions for me. I am blown away with how creative she is and I think you will be too!

How did you get started with your Etsy shop? Is this your full-time job? My entire life, my mother has demanded handmade presents from me. She doesn't really have an artistic bone in her body so she says that makes her appreciate my creative side that much more. A few holidays ago I was scrounging around for something to make her. I had decided I wanted to create perfume and after researching that stumbled into the art of soap-making! Once I gave it a try I loved it and my friends encouraged me to start an Etsy shop. I did it part-time until March of 2012 when I took the leap into having this as my full-time job!
What inspires you? As you can probably tell, I'm a total foodie and adore finding family run bakeries with little confectionery jewels. I love fragrances as well, so this creative endeavor matched up all my loves! I'm also greatly inspired by my friends and family. For instance, the mini beer mug soaps...one of my best friends, Julie absolutely goes nuts for beer. She loves discovering new favorites and even started making her own beer at home, just to keep up with her own personal demand for fresh and interesting brews. I decided she needed to take her beer love into the shower, so the mini beer mug soaps were created!
How did you discover you like making soap? Do you have molds for popular items? How long does it normally take you to create something? Trying new things, you'll always somehow discover a new passion. Once I tried it, I couldn't stop making soap! I have lots of molds to work with for everything. Each one takes anywhere from an hour to a few hours to create.
How do you come up with the items in your shop? Do you create every day of is it a more "as it comes" mentality? How I come up with them I'm not even sure myself! I just do what my heart leads me to. I'm making something everyday, but not always new things. Ideas come and go constantly, some are keepers and others turn out to be a flop, but that's how any creativity happens.
What's your favorite item in your shop right now? Does this ever change? I always have favorites and it's typically whatever I'm trying out to see how it looks. My current favorites are any of the Barefoot Butters. I do a lot of walking with my dog, so I'm always putting that on before our journeys and come home with super soft feet. My favorite scent is the Blueberry Lemon Verbena.
And just for fun - if you had to eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be? Oh my goodness, what a dangerous question! If I had to say, it'd probably be sushi. I've really been missing my favorite place in Boston and haven't yet found a new one that I love as much here in Connecticut. Because I haven't had it in so long, I could definitely eat that for the rest of my life!

Isn't Aubrey hilariously creative? Doesn't that Barefoot Butter sound fabulous? And how are you NOT wanting to freak out guests by having that brain soap in your bathroom?

Be sure to visit Aubrey's shop to see the rest of her creations!
