A few months back my book club read the novel The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and I loved it! In passing, someone in our group mentioned that would make for a fun theme party, and since I had a milestone birthday this year I took that idea and ran with it.
Throughout the book, the crew (or cast?) of the circus have fancy
midnight dinners - so I decided to have a Night Circus themed midnight
dinner! I would have loved to invite all my close friends and family but
since we live in a one-bedroom apartment, I kept it to the book club
ladies (as it was we had 16 people!), but of course I took pictures to
share! Also, when I say midnight dinner I mean midnight dinner - we had dinner at midnight, and I think when the last few people left it was 3 AM! (I didn't go to bed until after 4 o'clock in the morning which is crazy but was also so fun!)
If you haven't read the book there are two things you should know:
1. You need to read it.
2. The Night Circus is black and white (with occasional shades of grey), and the Revers (the people who love the circus) wear pops of red - this was the color scheme (and dress code!) of the party.
I didn't take all of these photos - I borrowed a few from friends - but at this point I'm just going to let the pictures tell the story!
My very own wishing tree...
Oh my gosh the cake! A friend of Ben's has a catering company and she made this - I can't get over it! It was strawberry with whipped cream filling and it tasted as delicious as it looked!
I was nervous to cut the cake...Tess however? Not so much.
Black and whites - cookies for people to take home as party favors!
I covered most of our big picture frames with black paper and put quotes from the book on them. I think it really helped make the room - and this one is one of my favorites!
It was a lot of work and I'm pretty sure I'll be tired for a week but it was such a fun way to ring in this next year!
Have you read The Night Circus? (If not, what are you waiting for?) Have you ever thrown a theme party?
Happy Monday!

I haven't done a themed party in a long time; this is an awesome one and I love how it all came together. So glad to hear you had a good time :) The photos are awesome. And that cake. YUM.
That cake looks AMAZING. Oh, my goodness. What a fun party idea! I loved that book, too, and this looks like such a good take on the midnight dinners. I LOVE that you did this!
LOVE this idea so much. Such a fun theme party! Happy your birthday!
First of all, I really have to read this book. Second of all, this looks like an amazing party, all the details are so great and that CAKE, amazing! I wouldn't have wanted to cut it either! I can't believe you actually had the dinner at midnight. I just convinced my friend to move our dinner this Friday to 7 from 7:30, and that's still too late for me ha ha. I would've had to sleep before and just wake up only to eat!
looks likefun!
I seriously LOVE that you did this!!! So so so fun. I would have loved to attend something like this. You did an amazing job planning and decorating! I also read that book and really enjoyed it. I read it when we were in Mexico earlier this year so had the chance to really get into it and read for hours on end!
I LOVE themed parties, especially ones related to books. I have yet to read this one. Looks like you all had lots of fun!
Oh my gosh, I'd totally missed this back in September. LOVE! What an amazing idea.
